Dental microabrasion is a recurrent dental treatment, which we use both to improve the aesthetics of the smile and to keep some teeth healthy. Despite this, it is not well known by patients. Is this also your case?
With this procedure, we lightly polish the tooth enamel in cases, for example, of depigmentation and discoloration, two situations that can occur for various reasons. In this article, from our dental clinic in Ibiza, we explain in which situations we resort to dental microabrasion.
When do we perform dental microabrasion?
Microabrasion is usually recommended to remove superficial enamel stains that negatively affect the esthetics of the smile, but also in other cases.
Stain removal
Staining or depigmentation of the teeth can occur for various reasons. Firstly, because of poor hygiene. Secondly, due to unhealthy lifestyle habits, including the consumption of tobacco and highly colored foods.
However, some patients present an enamel alteration known as dental hypoplasia. The white spots that it causes, which are very visible, can be removed by microabrasion. In some cases, it is also necessary to subsequently place porcelain or composite veneers.
Very mild caries
Superficial caries, which only affect tooth enamel, usually require a filling. However, when it is an incipient caries, we can opt for microabrasion to slow down its progression.
Are there alternative treatments for dental microabrasion?
Microabrasion is not the only possible treatment to solve the presence of stains or cavities. In fact, in many cases, we can recommend others that are more suited to the needs of each patient.
These include, for example, professional dental hygiene or prophylaxis, tooth whitening and veneers in the case of pigmentation and discoloration. On the other hand, when cavities cause discomfort, depending on their depth and extent, a filling or endodontics will be necessary.
