Self-ligating braces: the advance in orthodontics to achieve perfection in your smile.

They continue to be the most widely used option and have retained their effectiveness over the years. Conventional metal brackets have evolved to achieve greater comfort, better results and shorter treatment times. Conventional orthodontics as we knew it has changed significantly over the years. We work with the latest generation of self-ligating brackets in our centers in Barcelona and Ibiza, with the security of using the best materials, but also of working with the best professionals.

During orthodontic treatment, it is essential that patients prioritize the health of their gums and teeth to ensure optimal results. An innovative option for braces is Damon self-ligating brackets. These brackets securely attach the archwire to the metal piece attached to the front surface of the tooth, known as a bracket. Made of lightweight materials such as aluminum, they not only provide comfort but also minimize the risk of allergies or rejection. What sets them apart from conventional metal brackets is their revolutionary system that exerts less pressure. This not only improves comfort but also makes it easier to brush and maintain dental hygiene, and the unique self-ligating mechanism of these brackets reduces common problems such as mouth sores and irritation while offering exceptional durability.

However, it is important to note that maintaining healthy gums is equally vital to the success of orthodontic treatment. Patients should be aware that even with the benefits of Damon self-ligating brackets, gingivitis can still present complications. Gingivitis is a bacterial oral disease characterized by inflamed and bleeding gums. One of its main causes is the accumulation of food particles that are not adequately removed between the teeth.

Therefore, in addition to the convenience and effectiveness of Damon self-ligating brackets, patients should prioritize the health of their gums. Regular brushing and flossing are essential to prevent the development of gingivitis during orthodontic treatment. By ensuring that gums remain healthy, patients can maximize the benefits of this advanced orthodontic option and achieve the best possible result.

What is the difference between conventional and self-ligating brackets?

In both cases we are talking about fixed orthodontics and metal brackets, so many people end up discarding this option for aesthetic reasons and choosing lingual invisible orthodontics or Invisalign®. But the self-ligating brackets that we use in our clinics in Barcelona and Ibiza are an excellent option to correct most cases of crowding and malocclusion. They are Damon® brackets, a registered trademark that offers optimal results and represents the evolution of this type of orthodontics.

Damon® self-ligating brackets attach the archwire and the metal piece bonded to the front face of the tooth, the bracket. They are manufactured in materials such as aluminum, light, without causing allergies or rejection. They are more comfortable than conventional metal brackets, since they exert less pressure due to their revolutionary system. They are also more accessible when it comes to brushing our teeth and maintaining dental hygiene. The exclusive self-ligating system reduces the common problems of chafing and canker sores, and they are very resistant and durable.

If you choose this system, the orthodontist will schedule successive visits with you to easily and quickly adjust the brackets as the treatment progresses. However, the adaptation to it is much more bearable, again, than with the brackets of a lifetime.

Another of the advantages it offers, on this occasion, compared to other types of orthodontics, is its price. It is more economical than more aesthetic treatments. The disadvantages are those typical of fixed orthodontics, apart from the visible ones, and that is that you will not be able to remove the brackets until the treatment has been fully completed. There are also certain limitations when it comes to eating certain foods.

How do I know if they are the right type of braces for me?

Each patient has different treatment needs. The self-ligating brackets we work with in our Barcelona and Ibiza centers are a good option for those who are looking for a functional solution. But in order to know which type of orthodontics to choose, it is essential to visit the orthodontist first. You can make an appointment at either of our two clinics to solve your doubts. We will carry out a preliminary study, performing a dental CT scan to know the state of your mouth and how to address the problem that worries you. We will listen to your expectations and, depending on your specific needs, we will propose different orthodontic treatments.

Depending on the complexity of your case, we will choose one or the other option together with you, and we will estimate the total duration of the treatment. Generally, it is between 18 and 24 months, although in some cases it may be less time, depending on the body’s own response. At the end of the treatment, the orthodontist will give you retainers to keep your smile intact for life. The retainers may be removable, consisting of two splints to be worn at night each day. Or fixed, where we speak of a thin metal foil that is placed on the inner side of the teeth. The latter case is more comfortable but requires special attention in cleaning so that dental plaque does not accumulate in the area.

Whatever your choice, we will help you weigh the pros and cons of each orthodontic treatment until we find the one that makes you feel comfortable and achieves the desired result: the smile you want and that will reflect how you want to show yourself to the world.
