The best way to lose the fear of the dentist and pain
The conscious sedationDental sedation, also called dental sedation, is an anesthetic procedure, complementary to the local anesthesia injected by the dentist or surgeon, which consists of the administration of a combination of drugs (sedatives and analgesics) from before administering the local anesthesia and throughout the duration of the intervention.
With this medication, the patient is immersed in a state of relaxation, drowsiness, absence of pain and absence of memory of the time elapsed. In this way, the patient’s well-being and cooperation are optimized, the dentist’s or surgeon’s work is facilitated and at the same time negative memories and conditioning factors are avoided.
It is important to note that conscious sedation is not a light general anesthesia. Unlike the latter, the patient maintains spontaneous breathing, reflexes and the ability to respond to stimuli or verbal commands, for this reason it is called conscious sedation. These differences make this type of dental sedation a much safer and faster-recovery technique.
Not all dental clinics offer conscious sedation, but in our clinic we offer conscious sedation for patients who experience anxiety during certain treatments. While conscious sedation can be applied to any procedure that causes anxiety, it is most commonly used during dental implant surgeries. In addition, some patients also request conscious sedation before undergoing wisdom tooth extractions and root canals. To meet the needs of our patients, we also offer nitrous oxide sedation in our clinic.
Sedation and anesthesia are two different procedures with different objectives. Conscious sedation is a technique that aims to calm or soothe a person, making them feel more relaxed and comfortable during a medical procedure. On the other hand, anesthesia, especially local anesthesia, focuses on temporarily numbing a specific area of the body to eliminate pain or discomfort.
In dental practices, local anesthesia is commonly used to achieve temporary loss of sensation and pain in a particular part of the mouth. This technique is typically employed during procedures such as dental fillings or periodontal treatments. On the other hand, conscious sedation is used to create a state of calm and tranquility in the patient, reducing anxiety and improving their overall well-being.
Although both conscious sedation and local anesthesia serve different purposes, they can complement each other in dental procedures. While conscious sedation is administered to relieve fear and induce relaxation, local anesthesia is used to prevent pain. In this way, a dentist can administer conscious sedation to help calm the patient before using local anesthesia to ensure a pain-free experience.
Who can perform conscious sedation treatments?
This type of sedation should always be performed by physicians specialized in Anesthesiology, Resuscitation and Pain Management. The work of the anesthesiologist at the IMOI centers in Barcelona and Ibiza is not limited to sedation during surgery. We understand that to ensure maximum safety and the best results of dental treatment, you must perform an anesthetic procedure that takes place in 3 phases: before, during and after the intervention.
Prior to the day of the procedure under sedation the anesthesiologist will meet with the patient. He will perform a preoperative workup that includes a medical history, assess all preoperative tests and explain the procedure to you. In that appointment, patient and anesthesiologist will decide which is the best anesthetic procedure.
On the day of the operation the patient will receive all the medication necessary for sedation and before the end of the operation we will also administer the first dose of the medication to be taken in the days following the operation.
With this work pattern we ensure that the patient always has the necessary medication and we improve the postoperative period.
In IMOI dental clinics we have specialized in this type of interventions with conscious sedation, we have an experience of more than 20 years and we have the facilities, all the technical and human equipment so that the patient is absolutely controlled with the security of being in good hands.
What equipment is needed to perform sedation in a dental clinic?
To perform conscious sedation in a dental clinic requires very specific equipment and a specially prepared environment. The equipment required is detailed below:
1. Vital signs monitoring equipment: monitoring of vital signs, such as heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation, is critical during the conscious sedation procedure. This equipment allows medical personnel to continuously monitor and ensure patient safety.
Oxygen supply: A constant oxygen supply is essential during conscious sedation. This is achieved through the use of nasal goggles that provide adequate oxygen flow to keep the patient properly oxygenated.
3. Pulse Oximeter: A pulse oximeter is a device that is placed on the patient’s finger to noninvasively measure oxygen saturation in the blood. This equipment allows medical personnel to continuously monitor oxygen levels and react quickly to any changes.
4. Sphygmomanometer: A sphygmomanometer is used to accurately measure the patient’s blood pressure. This device is essential to assess and monitor blood pressure during the conscious sedation procedure.
5. Resuscitation equipment with semi-automatic defibrillator: In the event of a medical emergency during conscious sedation, it is essential to have resuscitation equipment, including a semi-automatic defibrillator. This equipment enables medical personnel to respond quickly and efficiently to unforeseen situations.
6. Intravenous resuscitation medication: In addition to the medical equipment mentioned above, intravenous resuscitation medication is necessary. This allows the medical team to quickly administer drugs in the event of an emergency and ensure an immediate response.
It is important to keep in mind that not all dental clinics have the necessary equipment and human resources to perform conscious sedation, as it requires a high level of specialization and the presence of an anesthesiologist physician during the entire dental treatment. In our clinic, we have a physician specialized in Anesthesiology and Resuscitation to ensure maximum patient safety and comfort during conscious sedation.

- Painless dental aesthetics.
Achieve greater comfort in dental treatments.
Some patients, although they do not report fear of the dentist nor will they undergo complex treatments or combined treatments, request to be sedated during the dental procedure. This is observed mainly in patients who require dental treatments (dental implants) or prolonged (dental esthetics).
Conscious sedation offers them comfort by eliminating pain (due to injections of local anesthetic and manipulation) and unpleasant sensations (noises, smells, discomfort from prolonged mouth opening and immobility, etc.). In addition, it shortens the perception of elapsed time and allows intravenous administration of drugs to reduce post-intervention discomfort.
The fact that almost all patients who have been sedated in IMOI dental clinics in Barcelona and Ibiza during a dental procedure decide to repeat this technique in their future visits, indicates the high degree of satisfaction with conscious sedation and its contribution, among other factors, to the loyalty of our patients.
What is the care after sedation?
After conscious sedation, it is important to keep in mind that the patient will need time to fully recover. Upon leaving the dental clinic, you may experience numbness and decreased reflexes. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that the sedated person does not drive or return home alone. Instead, they must be accompanied by a responsible adult who will care for the patient for at least the next 6 hours after treatment. This will ensure that support and assistance is available until the effects of sedation have completely worn off. During this recovery period, the patient may still feel drowsy or disoriented, so it is vital to have someone present to monitor their safety and well-being. In addition, it is advisable to follow all postoperative instructions provided by the dentist to facilitate a successful recovery.
It is essential to keep in mind that after sedation you will need some time to fully recover. You may experience drowsiness and reduced reflexes immediately after leaving the dental clinic. With this in mind, it is important not to drive or return home alone. We strongly recommend that you bring a responsible adult who can accompany you for the next 6 hours after treatment.
