One of the most common concerns among people who are interested in starting orthodontic treatment is whether they will be able to eat without pain and discomfort or carry out their habits in the same way as before.

If treatment is performed with
steel brackets
,
porcelain or sapphire
If braces are used, the dentist may prescribe mouthwash, orthodontic wax and a soft diet due to the hypersensitivity of the teeth, as well as to avoid possible breakage of the appliance.
What is recommended to eat with orthodontics
Although the use of dental appliances does not limit the patient’s quality of life, in many cases, the consumption of certain foods should be limited in favor of others that are more easily ingested or healthier:
Recommended foods
- Vegetables: Cooked, in creams and purees or mashed. They are very healthy and taking them soft will help not to force chewing.
- Fruits: As with vegetables, it is advisable to choose the ripest and softest fruits and avoid biting them directly, cutting them into pieces or making smoothies. If orthodontics has caused sores, it is important to avoid acidic fruits such as citrus fruits, which can cause the lesion to sting.
- Cereals, legumes and tubers: These types of foods will be very easy to consume through soups, stews, purees and creams. If we wish to eat bread, we should opt for tender breads, while if we wish to eat potatoes, it is important to opt for the softest cooked options.
- Eggs, fish and meats: As for meat, it is important to always choose tender meats, since they are easier to chew and do not cause complications for the cleaning of the brackets as the more fibrous ones do. The texture of the fish will be very comfortable to eat as well as the eggs, for example in omelet. Although gentle cooking such as baking is recommended, the main thing is to eat in small pieces and chew slowly.
Foods not recommended
- Candies and sweets: In addition to not being recommended for a healthy diet, they can stick to the appliance and hinder its hygiene.
- Crunchy foods such as cookies, bread sticks etc.: They can be difficult to chew, as well as strain the incisors and cause discomfort. They can also hinder hygiene.
- Spicy foods or spicy foods: They can cause stinging and unwanted discomfort.
As we can see, during orthodontic treatment we can eat everything we ate before, we just have to take into account the textures of the food.
Comfortable and trouble-free orthodontics
As an alternative solution to traditional brackets, there is Invisaling, a dental esthetic treatment consisting of invisible splint aligners.

This option is increasingly used as it is very discreet and comfortable, allowing the patient not only to eat as much as he/she wants, but also improving the hygiene of the appliance.
