Getting to know dental prostheses

dentures

There are two types of dentures made to your needs and as a prosthesis: implanted teeth and removable teeth. With or without implants.

Each of these prostheses has its own indications as they offer the patient the option of eliminating the damage to his natal teeth and obtaining new ones quickly so that he can continue to lead a normal life.

Before making an assessment of which type of prosthesis is best, let’s get to know them and explain them in depth:

Fixed dental prosthesis or with implants.

imoi fixed prosthesis

This type of prosthesis, as its name suggests, is completely fixed to your jawbone or maxilla and requires implants that are placed after removing the teeth that are in poor condition.

To replace these teeth, artificial roots made of a highly resistant material (such as titanium) must be placed. This type of root is fixed to your jawbone and from there your dental prostheses are built.

The advantages and disadvantages of each are discussed below. However, it is worth mentioning that with fixed dental prosthesis or with implants, the work done in the dental office is longer since an adequate implantation technique has to be applied to your particular case.

Despite the appearance of being very complicated, the process of applying dental implants has no major impact on the patient: once the teeth that will no longer be used have been removed, under local anesthesia, the roots (the implants) that will attach to your new teeth will be placed.

This type of implants can be total or partial and much depends on the situation of your jawbone and natal teeth for your IMOI dentist to determine which ones you need.

Removable prosthesis or without implants.

IMPLANTLESS DENTUREWhen we talk about a dental prosthesis that does not have implants, we are facing an option that the patient can remove and put in his mouth as many times as he wishes. This type of option was one of the pioneers in the development of prostheses and, despite being somewhat stigmatized, there are currently many options that allow the patient to enjoy a comfortable, discreet prosthesis that also allows him to continue with his normal life.

Once the patient’s teeth have been removed, he or she can use an implantless prosthesis that is previously elaborated after having made a dental prototype specifically adjusted for the comfort of the person who will wear the removable denture.

It is a comfortable prosthesis that can be total or partial. In the case of partial denture without implants, it can be semi-fixed using your own teeth by using a kind of minor connectors. These connectors will also make your teeth look much more natural.

Full dentures without implants also offer advantages to the patient and can help make the transition to a fixed prosthesis.

But let’s analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each of the above options.

Which is better, prostheses with implants or without implants?

Let’s delve into the benefits and drawbacks of both implant and non-implant prostheses. As the name suggests, dental implants offer greater security and stability when eating, laughing, speaking and more. They give patients a sense of confidence as they become a natural part of their body. Initially, adjusting to a dental implant may pose some challenges, but over time these concerns diminish. The notable advantage lies in the prevention of jaw bone movement, which differentiates it from conventional removable prostheses.

Dental implants consist of a titanium screw that functions as an artificial root, firmly anchored in the jawbone. A customized crown, designed to match the color and shape of the natural teeth, is attached to the implant. This procedure can be performed for a single tooth, several teeth or even the entire jaw or mouth. Unlike traditional dentures, dental implants provide a chewing experience that closely resembles that of natural teeth, surpassing the comfort offered by removable options and sometimes even surpassing that of fixed bridges.

Let’s analyze the pros and cons of each. Definitely as its name indicates, with dental implants we have a greater security when eating, laughing, talking, etc. It offers the patient confidence in its use because it becomes part of his body, a prosthesis to which you may have some difficulty to adapt at first but that after a while should not throw any problem, especially because it prevents any movement of the jaw bone.

However, a prosthesis without dental implants can be removed and this should also facilitate its maintenance and allow any type of adaptation to your existing teeth or to your jawbone. It does not require the patient to have any type of sedation and can also be removed at night to provide greater comfort to the wearer.

But going back to the positive points for implants, they have the great advantage that, by being fixed to your bone, the palate is not exposed to appliances that give it a feeling of discomfort.

In both cases the cleaning is possible and perfect; in one case doing it as if they were your own teeth and in the other case being able to remove them for a deep cleaning. In addition, it is possible to have comfortable teeth with both, thanks to advances in technology specialized in patient comfort.

Your dentist will have the final say on what is best for your health and what is best for you. Your IMOI dentist will present you with both alternatives and explain which procedure is best for you.
