If you feel a sharp, stabbing pain in a tooth or a molar, you may think you need a root canal. With this conservative treatment, we clean and sanitize the root canals of a dental piece, which is popularly known as “killing the nerve”. Subsequently, we seal and reconstruct it, in many occasions, also placing a dental crown to avoid fractures. In this way, in cases of deep caries or dental trauma, we can save the patient’s natural teeth. But have you ever wondered if you might need a second root canal on the same tooth or molar?
This treatment is successful in more than 90% of cases. Nevertheless, on certain occasions, it may fail. In this article, from our dental clinic in Ibiza, we explain when a reendodontics may be necessary and what symptoms you should pay attention to.
Reendodontics: why might you need a second root canal?
In some cases, certain factors influence the failure of an endodontic or root canal treatment, making it necessary to carry out a second treatment.
Firstly, when the patient suffers an infection in the tooth that has been present for a long time. Secondly, in the case of complex cases. That is, when the root canals of a tooth have complex shapes, making it more difficult to perform the treatment correctly. The presence of calcified teeth and molars also plays a role. Finally, a second root canal may also be necessary when the patient does not follow all the indications and advice given by the endodontist, especially related to daily hygiene and periodic check-ups.
What symptoms should you pay attention to?
If, after having a root canal, you experience any of the following symptoms, it is necessary to consult your dentist.
- Constant and sharp pain in the area where the treatment has been performed.
- Swelling of the face, especially close to where the root canal has been performed.
- Suppuration of the piece.
- Falling of the dental reconstruction or crown.
- Dental sensitivity.
