Dental implants and fixed prostheses on implants are two of the safest, most effective, long-lasting and esthetic treatments for replacing missing teeth and rehabilitating the mouth. In fact, its success rate is around 98% of cases. However, on some occasions, and especially due to lack of post-treatment care, the patient may experience some implant-related problems. This is the case of peri-implantitis.

Do you know what this pathology consists of? In this article, from our dental clinic in Barcelona, we explain what it is, what are its main symptoms and how we can prevent it.

Peri-implantar diseases: peri-implantitis

Peri-implantitis is one of the peri-implant diseases, very similar to periodontal diseases, but instead of affecting natural teeth, it affects dental implants.

Generally, this pathology appears and develops as a consequence of poor oral hygiene. That is, due to the accumulation of bacterial plaque and tartar in the tissues surrounding an implant.

In addition to inflammation of the surrounding mucosa, peri-implantitis also progressively destroys the bone that supports the implant. Therefore, it is important to detect and treat it in time. In severe cases, this oral disease can lead to treatment failure and loss of the implant.

Most frequent symptoms of this pathology

The main symptoms of peri-implantitis that we should be aware of are, on the one hand, inflammation, bleeding and suppuration in the gums. On the other hand, gingival tissue recession and bone loss.

How can we prevent peri-implantitis?

There are several risk factors that can increase the risk of suffering this pathology. Mainly, we must take into account poor oral hygiene, a history of periodontitis and smoking.

In this sense, to prevent the accumulation of bacterial plaque, it is essential to maintain a thorough hygiene routine . Not only brushing the teeth, but also cleaning the interdental spaces with floss or interproximal brushes. Secondly, the patient should have, at least, a professional dental hygiene every year and, in any case, attend the periodontal check-ups prescribed by the periodontist. Finally, regular check-ups allow us to prevent, detect and treat this and any other oral disease in time.
