Many people have some or all of their wisdom teeth, but did you know that some people never grow in their wisdom teeth? Also known as third molars or wisdom teeth, they are often associated with pain and discomfort, but this is not always the case. In the same way that no, we should not extract them on all occasions. In fact, wisdom teeth are extracted when they can cause various oral problems.
In this article, from our dental clinic in Ibiza, we explain what are the symptoms of the eruption of wisdom teeth, what problems they can cause and when we should extract them.
Symptoms of eruption of wisdom teeth
As we have said, the eruption of wisdom teeth is usually associated with pain. However, some people have no discomfort or any type of symptomatology.
In other cases, inflammation and infection of the area may occur, especially when the wisdom teeth grow at an angle or when they partially erupt and become retained in the gum.
What oral problems can they cause?
In addition to the acute and persistent pain in the area where the third molars erupt, their growth can cause a number of other problems. Among them, the most frequent are:
- Lack of sufficient space in the dental arch, since they are the last teeth in the mouth to erupt.
- Problems of dental crowding, as a consequence of the thrust of these pieces as they grow inclined or crooked.
- Difficulty in maintaining proper oral hygiene and, therefore, increased risk of other pathologies, such as caries, gingivitis and periodontitis.
- Occasionally, dental cysts, when wisdom teeth are retained in the gum.
Extraction of wisdom teeth
Wisdom teeth, therefore, are usually extracted only when the patient presents any of these problems. Or, on the contrary, when the risk of suffering them is high.
To determine the suitability of the exodontia, in addition to an evaluation of your condition, we carry out a thorough X-ray examination. Subsequently, if convenient, we perform extraction surgery.
The type of intervention will depend on the state of the tooth, whether it is retained in the gum or fully erupted, whether it causes problems to the rest of the teeth, etc.
