What is orthodontics and what are its benefits?
Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that focuses on the study, prevention and correction of malformations in maxillofacial and dental development, with the aim of promoting their morphological and functional well-being.
The benefits of orthodontic treatment include improving dental and facial esthetics, improving the occlusion of the mouth and periodontal health, correcting the position of the teeth and improving their functionality.
What types of orthodontics are there?
Depending on the existing problem, the patient’s age and other factors such as esthetic function or budget, different types of orthodontics can be considered:
– Fixed orthodontic treatments
These are the well-known brackets consisting of small pieces that are glued to the tooth and joined by means of archwires. This type of orthodontics cannot be removed until the end of the treatment, so the control of tooth movement is greater, and normally its price is the most economical.
However, this may cause more discomfort when eating, cleaning teeth or cause chafing or other injuries, as well as being less esthetic than other options.
– Removable orthodontic appliances
Removable orthodontic appliances are those appliances that consist of a plastic plate that cover part of the palate and are attached to some teeth. They are used to correct mild dental malpositions and cannot be used in all cases.
The benefits over fixed braces are that they can be removed for eating, brushing teeth, certain activities that might break them or when sleeping. However, the more hours used, the better and faster the result.
– Functional devices
Functional appliances are included in the type of removable orthodontics, being used to correct problems of development of the bone bases in their majority, as well as malocclusion problems due to problems in maxillofacial growth.
They are widely used to prevent these cases and to anticipate their appearance, so they are performed in patients in growth phases.
– Aesthetic orthodontics
Esthetic orthodontics is not a type of orthodontics in itself, but consists of a type of fixed orthodontics made with special materials so that it is not so visible.
This type of orthodontics has the same benefits as fixed orthodontics, but the materials used are not steel, but you can opt for porcelain or sapphire, or the application of lingual brackets.
– Invisible Orthodontics: Invisaling®.
Invisaling
is an innovative cosmetic dental treatment consisting of removable invisible aligners that can gradually align the teeth. Although the treatment is somewhat longer than with traditional braces, this option is increasingly used because it is very discreet and comfortable, being able to remove them for eating, brushing, etc., but covering more cases than removable orthodontics.
