Placing
dental implants
is one of the most comfortable and effective ways to restore your smile after the loss of one or more teeth. Implants are a definitive solution with countless advantages over removable prostheses.
You have probably heard that, in order to get a dental implant, it is necessary to meet certain requirements, such as having the jaw bone in good condition. And it is true. Bone is the element that supports the natural roots of teeth and implants.
So, what happens when the quality or quantity of my alveolar bone is not sufficient? Until a few years ago, the solution in these cases was to opt for other types of substitution treatments. However, with the
dental bone grafts
However, with dental bone grafts, we can achieve a regeneration of the bone mass so that it is capable of integrating and holding the implants.
In which cases are dental bone grafts indicated?
Dental bone grafts are indicated for all those people who wish to have an implant placed and who have suffered a loss of bone mass or whose bone is compromised in one way or another.
In our
dental clinic in Barcelona
and the
dental clinic in Ibiza
we perform a CT scan and a free preliminary study to check if you need a graft before placing the implants. Most of the time this process is not necessary, as patients maintain bone health after tooth loss and the dental screw and crown can be placed.
If, after the study, our dentists determine that you have suffered a decrease in bone mass or think that your bone may not be able to hold the implant well, they will inform you of the different possibilities.
How is a dental bone graft procedure performed?
The dental bone grafting procedure is very simple. Because of its name, some people may feel intimidated, but it is a process that is not difficult to reverse and whose results are proven to be effective.
For patients who wonder if the dental implant hurts, the entire process is performed under anesthesia. This can be local, general or conscious sedation. Ask us and we will explain which one is the most suitable for your case.
This treatment is performed in different phases:
1.- Study of the alveolar and mandibular bone
Before proceeding with the intervention it is necessary to study the quantity and quality of the patient’s bone. To do this, we start by performing a free CT scan of the mouth, thanks to which we can determine the extent of the injury and the amount of bone that we need.
2.- Extraction or procurement of bone for grafting
Depending on the circumstances of each patient, we have different possibilities when implanting bone.
- The patient’s own bone, taken from areas such as the patient’s own jaw, skull or iliac crest.
- Bone from a human donor.
- Bone from an animal donor.
- Artificial bone.
3.- Intervention for bone implantation
The surgeon makes a small incision in the area where the dental bone needs to be implanted and places the graft. It is then fixed so that it does not move and is covered with a special membrane designed to prevent the implant from being lost. Finally, a suture is made to close the area and prevent saliva from affecting the recovery.
4.- Recovery and integration of the bone graft.
After surgery, recovery is rapid. You can return to normal life almost immediately, always taking care not to engage in high-impact sports or contact activities that could affect the wound.
Depending on the type of bone grafted, the amount needed and the patient’s characteristics, the integration of the new bone is complete three to four months after treatment. If the donor is an animal or artificial bone, the process can take up to six months.
