Many of the world’s population, at some point in their lives, may undergo a dental extraction, most frequently a molar extraction. This is a procedure that consists of extracting the diseased tooth, which unfortunately is no longer curable and must be removed to avoid possible serious infections.

Tooth extraction can be simple or also performed in a surgical way. The procedure most frequently used in IMOI clinics is simple, although we have our own operating room approved for outpatient surgery. Go to this section to see our facilities. Therefore, it is important that the dentist makes an evaluation of the conditions of the molar to be extracted, because if it is found that the root access becomes difficult or requires more extraction force, it is essential the surgical action of the tooth.

Reasons for dental extraction

There are numerous reasons why dental extractions are recommended, here I explain the most frequent cases:

  1. Broken, fractured, split teeth, teeth that have been affected by decay and cannot be reconstructed.
  2. In cases of advanced periodontitis, cysts, complicated sinusitis, extractions must also be performed.
  3. When there are poorly positioned teeth that are impossible to align with orthodontics.
  4. Extractions of teeth for orthodontic purposes.

This is because the removal of the tooth prevents the spread of infection to other teeth and the entire body, prevents the loss of bone mass, the development and worsening of periodontal disease, and prevents the development and worsening of periodontal disease.

The extraction of teeth for orthodontic purposes provides the opportunity to make more space in the arch to allow the teeth to correct their position.

Many times, in IMOI dental clinics we try to save the tooth to prevent the patient from losing his teeth and we usually apply some methods to delay the extraction.

Tooth extraction is recommended in the most severe cases, when there is no possibility of saving the tooth and the dental pathology has caused irreparable damage that cannot be treated in any other way.

Surgical methods for delaying tooth extraction

There are some surgical auxiliary methods to prolong the life of the natural tooth and delay tooth extraction:

Periapical curettage – an endodontic surgical procedure in which the infected tissue around the root tip of the tooth is removed (you can ask your family doctor for more information).

Apicoectomy is a surgical removal of the apices or root end of a tooth and the infected bone tissue.

After tooth extraction, pain management and tips

No one wants to have a dental extraction, precisely because of the fear of pain and discomfort; but new discoveries in dentistry have facilitated this process, reducing the pain and discomfort that once characterized the process.

Doctors now use anesthesia to make the extraction more comfortable and to eliminate or reduce the patient’s pain and anxiety. In this section you can learn about
painless treatments and conscious sedation.

In order not to have pain or discomfort after a dental extraction, you should follow all the advice of the IMOI dentist, some of these are:

  1. First, constant pressure should be maintained on the wound with gauze to stop the bleeding. For 30 minutes the gauze should be kept on the wound caused by the tooth extraction to facilitate coagulation. Cold compresses and ice packs may also be helpful.
  2. A few days after tooth extraction, you should avoid eating hard, too hot or too cold foods. This will reduce the possibility of injury.
  3. After tooth extraction, it is advisable to take analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs immediately after surgery, since pain or discomfort may occur after the anesthesia wears off. In some cases, the physician may prescribe antibiotics.
  4. Do not chew, do not rinse and do not touch the wound for at least 24 to 48 hours afterwards, as this may cause injury or break the stitches.
  5. It is important not to smoke for at least 24 hours after the tooth extraction has been performed, because smoking increases the risk of bleeding and delays healing.

Warning signs after tooth extraction

Bleeding and swelling are normal after tooth extraction. If after 4 to 6 hours the bleeding continues unusually, you should contact your dentist immediately or go to an emergency clinic.

Swelling peaks 24 hours after surgery and can last up to a week after removal. It can be relieved with ice compresses on the cheek on the side of the extraction for 20 minutes, to be repeated every hour.

Sometimes, the patient feels discomfort when opening the mouth. This is due to muscle spasms, but this condition disappears after a few days.

Contraindications to tooth extraction

In some situations, tooth extractions must be temporarily postponed due to adverse circumstances. These situations are:

Before extracting the tooth, we weighed the advantages and disadvantages of the intervention. If tooth extraction is unavoidable, remember to talk to your doctor to know the options or if it is possible to recover the lost tooth through implants, bridges or dentures.

If in your case you will undergo an extraction, remember that it is because your doctor has already evaluated all the methods to save your tooth and has not been able to do so. Follow his instructions and nothing will happen in terms of pain, discomfort and recovery.

What is dental implant dentistry and how does it help to restore the best smile?

Dental implantology is a highly effective solution for smile rehabilitation. Through the use of dental implants, the absence of extracted or missing teeth can be successfully treated. These implants are titanium prostheses that are surgically placed using advanced techniques.

The implantologist performs oral surgery on the mandible or maxilla, which acts as a support system for the gums and teeth. Once the implant is inserted, a process called , which allows the implant to integrate and securely adhere to the bone, is carried out. This solid base allows for the placement of a crown or bridge over the implanted teeth, ultimately restoring both the functionality and esthetics of the patient’s smile.

Dental implantology is therefore a modern, predictable and reliable method to rehabilitate the smile by replacing missing teeth and improving the overall dental appearance.

What are immediate post-extraction implants and how do they make it easier to have teeth quickly?

Post extraction dental implants refer to a technique where a tooth is extracted and replaced with an implant in a single session. This innovative procedure allows for the rapid placement of an artificial tooth shortly after extraction. Taking advantage of a minimally invasive extraction, the implant is integrated into the newly freed space.

In these cases, temporary crowns are placed over the implants. This means that immediately after leaving the dental office, the patient can have a complete denture. Once the osseointegration process is complete, usually within approximately three months, a permanent prosthesis is placed. This definitive prosthesis restores full functionality to the patient’s dentition.

The main benefit of this implant procedure is its ability to significantly shorten treatment times and preserve the alveolar structure of the jawbone in a single surgical procedure. The key objective is to minimize bone resorption and the need for gingival remodeling as much as possible. By providing fast and efficient tooth replacement, post-extraction dental implants offer patients a quick restoration of their dental esthetics and functionality.

How are dental implants placed and what is osseointegration?

Dental implants are placed by implantologists through oral surgery in the jaw or upper jaw, specifically in the maxillary bone, which supports the gums and teeth. The implant, once inserted, undergoes a process called osseointegration, where it fuses securely with the surrounding bone. This integration allows the implant to become part of the jaw bone, providing a solid foundation for the replacement tooth or teeth.
