Dental implants<\/strong> and fixed prostheses on implants<\/strong> are two of the safest, most effective, long-lasting and esthetic treatments for replacing missing teeth and rehabilitating the mouth. In fact, its success rate is around 98% of cases<\/strong>. However, on some occasions, and especially due to lack of post-treatment care, the patient may experience some implant-related problems. This is the case of peri-implantitis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Do you know what this pathology consists of? In this article, from our dental clinic in Barcelona<\/a>, we explain what it is, what are its main symptoms and how we can prevent it.<\/p>\n Peri-implantitis<\/strong> is one of the peri-implant diseases<\/strong>, very similar to periodontal diseases, but instead of affecting natural teeth, it affects dental implants.<\/p>\n Generally, this pathology appears and develops as a consequence of poor oral hygiene<\/strong>. That is, due to the accumulation of bacterial plaque and tartar<\/strong> in the tissues surrounding an implant.<\/p>\n In addition to inflammation of the<\/strong> surrounding mucosa<\/strong>, peri-implantitis also progressively destroys the bone that supports the implant<\/strong>. Therefore, it is important to detect and treat it in time. In severe cases, this oral disease can lead to treatment failure and loss of the implant.<\/p>\n The main symptoms of peri-implantitis that we should be aware of are, on the one hand, inflammation<\/strong>, bleeding<\/strong> and suppuration<\/strong> in the gums. On the other hand, gingival tissue recession<\/strong> and bone loss<\/strong>.<\/p>\n There are several risk factors that can increase the risk of suffering this pathology. Mainly, we must take into account poor oral hygiene<\/strong>, a history of periodontitis<\/strong> and smoking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In this sense, to prevent the accumulation of bacterial plaque, it is essential to maintain a thorough hygiene routine <\/strong>. Not only brushing the teeth, but also cleaning the interdental spaces with floss or interproximal brushes. Secondly, the patient should have, at least, a professional dental hygiene every year<\/strong> and, in any case, attend the periodontal check-ups prescribed by the periodontist<\/strong>.
