If you went to your dental clinic and after the previous analysis of your dental case, your dentist has recommended orthodontic treatment, then surely some doubts have arisen, some of which probably occurred to you after the visit to your clinic.

We are all afraid of pain, and of course many of the doubts that come to mind when we are told we will be wearing braces are related to pain.Does it hurt when you get braces? Do we feel such unbearable pain that we can’t even eat? Will we be in pain for years?

At IMOI we always clear up these doubts for all patients who have to undergo this type of treatment and we give them some advice so that they can go through the whole treatment without pain and in the best possible way. Stay and read on.

Pain prior to the application of your orthodontics.

Whether or not you have an episode of pain before your braces are placed depends a lot on the treatment you are going to undergo.

There are some patients who, due to the type of jawbone they have or some condition detected in their clinical case, need extractions of dental pieces; although in most cases it is not necessary, due to the advances in orthodontics.

If you have already spoken to your IMOI dentist and he/she has confirmed that you will keep all your teeth, go to our next section where we will explain pain management during and after the placement of your braces.

However, if in your case it is not possible to avoid an extraction and you have not gone through a similar episode before, you should know the following:

The extraction of a tooth or tooth is performed under the effects of anesthesia, this is applied to the gum and until it takes effect your dentist will not proceed to remove the piece.

If your dentist is about to start the extraction and you still feel that the anesthesia has not taken effect, tell him/her. Only you know your body and if there is a delay in the effects your dentist should know.

Once the extraction has been performed, you will spend a few hours with the effects of anesthesia so you will not feel any pain. You should take the prescribed analgesic before the numbing effect wears off and you begin to feel pain. You will not need to take painkillers for more than 3 days and you will be ready to have your braces placed.

Orthodontic pain during the application of your braces.

The process of bracket placement does not involve any pain for the patient. At most you may find it slightly annoying to have your mouth open for several minutes.

But don’t worry, because your IMOI specialist will help you by using special material, an opener that if it is well placed you won’t even feel it.

Pain control when wearing braces.

Once you have your braces in place, it is very likely that you will have some episodes of discomfort and pain. To avoid such discomfort, consider the following:

If you use metal brackets, once you have them in place, make many movements with your mouth before leaving the office, to detect any possible uncomfortable wire for your mouth.

At first you will feel discomfort in the mouth because you are not used to having a foreign agent, such as brackets, inside it and even as the days go by they may form mouth ulcersDo not panic because this is completely normal and to counteract such discomfort, your IMOI dentist will prescribe special mouthwashes and the use of orthodontic wax. This wax will be your best friend during the treatment because with just a small part that you place in the area of the brackets where it bothers you, you will have enough to eliminate any pain and discomfort that any bracket, band, band or arch is causing in your gums, cheeks or tongue.

Since orthodontic treatment is a constant and strong movement of your teeth, it is logical that there will be discomfort in the adjustments that your dentist makes at each visit. This pain varies in each patient but it is not disabling or something that prevents you from continuing with your normal life. Your dentist will prescribe an ideal analgesic that will not affect the dental readjustment process, so you only have to ask for it and he will give it to you.

The diet that is recommended for patients with braces is a soft diet, precisely because of the hypersensitivity of the teeth and their limited ability to chew hard things without pain. In addition, taking care of our orthodontic appliances is basic to avoid a delay in the treatments and by avoiding eating things with a lot of hardness, we extend the life of our brackets.

Children and pain in orthodontics.

For children, pain control during treatment with braces is essential so that they can lead a normal life without alterations in their daily rhythm.

As we said before, the pain is not so intense as to incapacitate the patient, otherwise there would not be so many children undergoing orthodontic treatment.

If we go back in time, it is likely that we will find cases where there was a lot of pain and discomfort for patients of any age who underwent these treatments; but fortunately, nowadays, wearing braces is very simple, very comfortable and practically painless.

There is no way to say no to beautiful, healthy, well cared for and full of life teeth after braces treatment. The pain will only be mild and episodic and can be easily controlled under medical prescription, with non-steroidal analgesics that with light doses will mitigate any discomfort during the process.

In addition, it is important that at any age at which braces are applied, you have a correct brushing and follow the instructions given by your dentist, that will allow you to conclude your treatment satisfactorily.

At IMOI Barcelona and IMOI Ibiza, we follow editorial principles that guarantee the authenticity of all the information we disseminate.
